On a related note and with apologies to original poster, Scott Dudley if
these problems do not have a common cause, I'm also having a problem with
the alsa-lib-0.1.3pre1.tar.gz file I downloaded yesterday.

It untars and unzips but does not appear to include a configure script
etc. I'm away from my linux box and cannot give details but I tried
./configure, Make etc all without any result. If anyone has compiled it
successfully I'd appreciate some pointers, even to the obvious! Things are
not always "obvious" to those of us finding our way around linux by the
seat of our pants! As far as I could see, there weren't any install
instructions in the alsa-lib or alsa-util-0.0.8.tar.gz archives.

In searching through the archive for "clues,"I came upon a posting in the
archive from Jaroslav where he referred to the correct order for doing
make install for alsa-driver, alsa-lib and alsa-utils. What is the correct
order - driver, lib, utils? I did the driver first and it seems to have
compiled successfully. alsa-utils wouldn't compile complaining about not
having compiled the libs first.

cat /dev/sndstat shows that my card, a Creative Ensoniq (es1371) is
detected correctly. I do get the Audio Devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
message but I'm assuming that this can be corrected by editing the
conf.modules file and is not related to the failure to compile alsa-lib or
alsa-utils. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Jesse McDonnell
