cat /proc/asound/version works for me:

cat /proc/asound/version 
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.3.0-pre1.
Compiled in Dec 21 1998 for kernel 2.1.131 (SMP).

You might want to make sure your outputs are not muted.
