If you want output from onboard synthesizer - AudioPCI chips don't have
one, thus don't expect any support for it.

You should wait if someone will code some software synthesizer (like W95
driver) or use timidity...

P.S. Raw MIDI devices can be used only for control of external MIDI
devices connected over Joystick port..
