ESS webpage says that the ESS1879 will do full-duplex
stereo.  

OSS tech says that it will only do 8-bit DMA mono full-duplex,
and that they do not support this.

What does ALSA say?  I would love to have full duplex on
my laptop, for portable multitracking.
