Hmm. I don't know about which soundcard you are speaking. ES1370 and
ES1371 have very different analog mixer control.

ALSA uses linear volume settings, OSS uses exponential volume settings.
This means that (by human ear) is good volume only in upper range (60% +)
with ALSA mixer.

No, ALSA have all controls for ES1370/71 mixers. Maybe there should be
small bug in register settings. You may check hardware documentation
and my code if you find some bugs.. ES1371 code may contains some bugs -
I don't have soundcard with this chip.

:-)) I should say that I don't hear to this time soundcard which doesn't
have white noise if full volume is set. If you want clear sound - use
some soundcard with IEC-958 (S/PDIF) output and use D/A converter in
amplifier. Computers are very noisy.
