Are you sure that this behaviour is caused by alsa official packages
(I mean alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils)? If you test alsaconf script,
you may reach some trouble.

Looks like /etc/conf.modules configuration is for some reason lost. RH 5.1
uses for all additional drivers (including network) this file. I hope that
this error isn't caused by alsa packages (I don't have other report)...
