Thanks for your amazingly prompt response to my last question, Jaroslav.
The alterations you suggested to my conf.modules worked!

Applications now produce sound, but two large problems remain: 

I cannot get recording to work with an attached (passive electret) 
microphone, which works well with the OSS crippleware.  I have the mixer
set to accept input from it.  When CD is set as the input sound source, I
get excellent quality recording (arecord) from the CD-ROM.

In Quake2, sound is delayed about 3 seconds.  I shoot and see myself shoot
onscreen, and 3 sec. later, hear the sound of myself firing.

Any pointers would be greatfully dereferenced.
