No devices are muted, but the volumes are 0%!!!!

You should see lines that look more like:

Master          100% (  0.00dB) : 100% (  0.00dB)

Run alsamixer and make sure that the channels are not only unmuted, but the
power bars go all the way to the top and you see "100<>100" at the bottom,
not "0<>0".
