I was able to get all the drivers to nicely install them, but even after
editing the setups it appears that no sounds come out. cat /etc/sndstat
produces the following:

-----------------------
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.2.0-pre10p1 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux nallukka.bodom.fi 2.0.36 #1 Tue Oct 13 22:17:11 EDT 1998 i586
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:
Type 10: ALSA emulation

Card config:
AMD InterWave at 0x220, irq 11, dma 5&7

Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG

Synth devices:
0: AMD InterWave

Midi devices:
0: AMD InterWave

Timers:
0: AMD InterWave
1: GF1 timer #1
2: GF1 timer #2
7: system timer

Mixers:
0: AMD InterWave rev B (codec)

WARNING!!! The /dev/sndstat device is obsolete. Support for this device
may
be REMOVED in the future!!! Better information about ALSA driver is
available
  in the /proc/asound directory.

------------------------

Could the "Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG" have something to do with
this problem?
