as for your troubles with rh 5.1, I run rh 5.0, and to get my mixer settings, I
added two lines to my rc.local file to achieve what you are trying to:

modprobe snd-audiopci
amixer -r

When you have your computer running, and the levels of your mixer the way you want
them, type amixer -w, this will save them to a file, the amixer -r will retrieve
them.
