In a way, I agree with both sides of the argument. I originally
downloaded ALSA because I have an ES1371 and wanted basic sound support to
(just as you said), listen to CDs while I do real work. That still is my
main attraction to ALSA. There are a few things I am fighting with that
make it a little bit of a pain (for instance, I have RH5.1 and try to run
alsasound start in my rc.local and then cat a file which contains my mixer
settings into /proc/asound/0/mixer0; unfortunately, it gives an error that
sound is already running (but if you look at /proc/asound/0/mixer0 you
see that it doesn't see the ES1371 chipset or any other for that matter).
I have to log in as root and do alsasound stop; alsasound start, and then
cat the file before sound works.)

Even given that, I can see a need for a nice sound architecture. There
are a couple of projects that I am meaning to work on if I ever find the
time, that ALSA might be very useful for. I haven't done the research so
I can't say for sure.

Now that AZ can get support for his card in a dev kernel, perhaps he
should give up on ALSA. It might not be the best solution for him.

Jaroslav has mentioned a couple of times that he would like to get away
from coding drivers and focus more on the API? Now that sound support in
the kernel is broader, is there a reason that the API could not be
rewritten to work with kernel drivers so that he could spend his effort on
what he seems to see as the more important effort?
