Hi,

I just installed alsa-driver 0.2.0 on my Linux 2.0.34 machine with a GUS
Classic.

aplay and arecord work fine and most other stuff. But I have some problems
with /dev/audio.

cat /dev/audio > /tmp/test.au
and then
cat /dev/audio > /dev/audio

playes back the recorded sample with a miserable quality. Is this "normal"
or did I do something wrong?

When I play back /tmp/test.au with aplay it sounds fine, but this doesn't
help me with speak freely which just opens /dev/audio and reads and writes
to it like a file. The audio I receive from some other machine sounds
fine, but the sound I send to some other computer is horrible.

Catting a soundfile where aplay prints the following "Mu-Law, Speed 8000
Hz, Mono" sounds fine. But aplay prints "Unsigned 8-bit, Speed 8000 Hz,
Mono" for /tmp/test.au.

How can I convince /dev/audio to give me data in the proper format? And
why does it give me a different format than the one it expects to get?

cu,
Lars
