Subject: Broken sound with AudioPCI

I have a Creative Labs AudioPCI card and Debian Linux 2.0.34. I
installed ALSA a few days ago and after a lot of work (and reading numerous
newsgroup messages) I finally got it working.

I'm loading ALSA by adding 2 lines to the /etc/modules file that simply
say:

     snd-audiopci
     snd-pcm1-oss

BTW, I found out that the second module doesn't load automatically when
snd-audiopci is loaded.

Anyway, I got the sound working properly. Most applications that I use
have recognized the sound driver. However, I'm experiencing problems with
the sound quality.

When I play MIDIs in TiMidity or MP3s in X11Amp, the sound is really
distorted and broken. I get this weird cracking noise that doesn't go away.
The MP3 sound is so distorted that the MP3 even skips. I tried playing with
the Timidity options and adjusting the sample rate and buffer size, but it
didn't help at all.

I don't think it's the machine or the sound card either. I have a
Pentium II 300 which is more than capable of playing MIDIs at 44KHz and my
sound card works perfectly in Win95.

Does anyone have any ides what's going on ?

     Alex
