Hi t. !

Thank you *VERY* much for this big info! In the meahnwhile I have had help from
Lars Nordlund, who have also tried the alsa-stuff and have had good experience
with setting the plug'n'pay feature in the kernel. This will set up the GUS, so
that the driver could be inserted and recognizes the card. I have had the
following setup while the driver is running:

 'cat /dev/sndstat' give me:

Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.2.0-pre7 emulation code)
 Kernel: Linux solfire 2.1.126 #1 Sat Oct 24 08:12:43 1998 i586
 Config options: 0

 Installed drivers:
 Type 10: ALSA emulation

 Card config:
Gravis UltraSound Plug & Play at 0x220, irq 5, dma 5&6

 Audio devices:
0: AMD InterWave rev B (codec)

 Synth devices:
 0: AMD InterWave

 Midi devices:
 0: AMD InterWave

 Timers:
 0: AMD InterWave
 1: GF1 timer #1
 2: GF1 timer #2
 7: system timer

 Mixers:
0: AMD InterWave rev B (codec)

Looking to this, I would say (= "I don't know"), that everything is set up
ok. On the other hand, trying to play midi files with withj jazz/playmidi give
me an error message "/dev/sequencer: no such device" or
"/dev/sequencer2: no such device". Is midi support functional with the alsa
drivers? What midi-application would work with it? Are there plans to support
additional midi-instrument-files like the UTOPIA-soundbank, which I have buyied
to be used with the old ultra-drivers from the same author?

Yes, I have used the isapnp version 1.16. If there is no change in the abiltiy
to play midi between setting up the card via kernel pnp-support and the
"handmade setup" via isapnp, I would keep my hands off the isapnp tool, cause
 it once locked my kernel.

Comparing the output (below) with the output of the equivalent "files" of my
system shows, that they are pretty the same. Only the IRQ and DMA channels have
different numbers. Is there a special reason why choosing exactly THAT
 attachment?

 KEEP HACKING!
