You can check how are DMA channels assigned by 'cat /proc/sound/0/sb16'.
You probably doesn't use 16-bit DMA channel ('cat /proc/sound/cards') or
you forced use 16-bit DMA channel for record direction. In other cases (if
one 8-bit DMA channel and one 16-bit DMA channel exist) playback defaults
always to 16-bit (if record isn't active).
