I have in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local script (RedHat 5.1) Bthe following lines

--------
# ISA PNP for the AWE64
/sbin/isapnp /etc/pnp.conf
# Installing ALSA
cd /usr/src/alsa/CVS/alsa-driver/utils
./insert sb16
/usr/local/bin/amixer -p /root/.amixerrc -r
---------

The amixer tool comes from the alsa-utils package. This is a kludge but it
works quite well for me..

unpack, cd into the directory, ./configure;make
