ALSA is not the LUSP renamed, it is a new project, with mostly new code.
It's being mostly redesigned from scratch.

It's not a newer version, it's a new project. For fully fledged /dev/sequencer
support with a GUS, you have to use the LUSP driver. Support for
/dev/sequencer in ALSA is not yet complete.

If you want to use ALSA to play mod's, there was a post a while back about
porting mikmod to ALSA.

Hmm, the mailing list archive on http://alsa.jcu.cz seems to be wacked.
Jaroslav, do you know about this?

Anyway, the announcment said:

I just wanted to say that MikMod now supports ALSA. An official patch has
been released so that GUS-type soundcards owners can enjoy MikMod...
The official MikMod page is currently located on
http://www.mygale.org/~miodrag/mikmod

I haven't tried this yet, but it's probably your best bet for playing mods
under ALSA right now.
