Hello,

I was just recently introduced to alsa, and decided to take a look
at it since my sound chip isn't supported by the kernel. It appears that
the ESS1887 isn't supported by alsa either. I own an HP OmniBook 800CT,
and, like the other Linux users of this fine notebook, have been unable to
find Linux sound drivers for it.
If I compile the Linux kernel drivers, it detects an ESS1688, and
reports no errors on loading the driver. The problem is that when I attempt
to do wave audio, all I get is a "popping" noise. I tried the alsa driver
for the ES1688, wondering if it might be more "generic" and work with my
chip, but, alas, it did not. I looked on the ESS web site, and they state
there quite clearly that this chip is fully SB8 compatible. I realize that
in many cases this sort of statement refers to the situation AFTER the chip
has been initialized. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows if there is
support for the ESS1887 being worked on, and if not, what it might take to
get the chip supported. From the ESS website, the ESS1887 is fully
compatible with the ESS1888, so if a driver existed for either chip, I
believe it would work for both.

Thanks in advance for any help you kind folks may be able to give
me.
