Doh! Ok, I should have seen that. RTFM, Eric.

I took a close look at the card (as best I could without pulling it out) and
didn't see any chips on there from Philips. Everything was from Motorola,
except for the IW chip itself, of course. There's a Philips TEA6300T on
my video capture card (also from STB) but not on the Sound Rage.

The pnpdump output doesn't show anything that looks like Tone Control:

bock# grep string /etc/isapnp.conf
# ANSI string -->InterWave Audio Card<--
#     ANSI string -->Synth & Codec<--
#     ANSI string -->Disabled ATAPI CD-ROM<--
#     ANSI string -->Game Port<--
#     ANSI string -->SB Digital Audio<--
#     ANSI string -->GM Music<--

So I guess the answer is that the STB Sound Rage 32 should use snd-interwave
and the STB Ultrasound 32 should use snd-interwave-stb.

If you want to take a look at the card, I got it from here:

http://www.heartlandparts.com/27t.html

It's got a reasonably high resolution photo. Not good enough to read all of
the chip markings, though.

It looks like a pretty good card for the price.

Thanks, yet again,

Eric
