Ok, I got the newest alsa, and compiled it and followed these directions

./configure --with-debug=detect
make install
./snddevices

all of that went fine

Edit your /etc/conf.modules (look to kerneld/kmod support section

mine was blank! did nothing

/sbin/modprobe snd-cs4236.o snd_port 0x534 snd_cport 0x120 snd_mpu_port
0x300 snd_fm_port 0x388 snd_jport 0x200 snd_irq 5 snd_mpu_irq 9 snd_dma1
1
snd_dma1_size 64kB snd_dma2 3 snd_dma2_size 64kB

did that(is that how im supposed to do it?) and it seemed to work, so i
rebooted, but i have no sound! cant open /dev/dsp! im sure i did
something wrong, but what?
do I add all of that(excluding /sbin/modprobe) to /etc/conf.modules?

modprobe snd-cs4236 or whatever wouldnt work!
thanks for the help!
