I've had the same experience with my S3 card (TB Daytona).  I would also add
that (compared to OSS and Windoze) the volume control appears to be
"nonlinear" (regardless of the units in which I specify the level) - there
is a gradual change in volume at the low end, and then the volume starts
changing significantly more at the high end of the volume range. Or that is
how my ears hear it, at least ...
