And I'm testing it without PnP configuring. ;-) It's on the AL440LX
motherboard (Intel Pentium II chip, indeed).

Due to work I only try to get everything om my PC right during weekends, and
not all of them, so progress is slow, especially since sound is purely me as a
user, rather than someone who needs to know. ALSA I discovered only recently,
so I won't comment too much as yet, but already I know it must be better than
OSS, since the latter uses three IRQ's and two mixer devices, and ALSA uses the
one IRQ of the card only (haven't completely checked on the mixer, allthough so
far only one "works", which is as should be).

Talking about ALSA 0.2.0-pre2, testing mostly with smix 1.1 (sometimes trying
xmixer or xmix) on Linux kernel 2.0.34:

So far my mixer results are: Volume control works, treble and bass don't
audibly, synth and pcm not a clue (don't know easy ways to test yet),
line(-in) has no device attached, so is also a blank, Mic doesn't seem to work
(OSSlite works there), CD works, and Mix makes no difference either. smix mute
controls only work after unmuting channels with alsamixer. xmixer 2.2 also
reports "Can't read flag" on trying loudness, surround or mute, but that it's
done with any sound module (RedHat SB8+OPL3+{CS4231|MSS&WSS}, OSSlite, ALSA).

All this was done by testing playing CD's and blowing closely into my mike and
listening to the result on the stereo-set on line-out.

And of course I'm totally ignorant as to find which programs or drivers are to
blame, yet. ;-)

But that's just my single cent, the next cent will certainly come when I've
gotten a few more clues attached to the appropriate ports.

With kind regards,
Stefan.
