I did install ALSA with the early debian 2.0 around the beginning of May

Maybe the version of GCC has changed since this moment, but it sounds a weird
problem ... Do the other programs compile without problem ? Didn't you have
any problem installing your gcc ?

indeed, there was no such a problem with the version of ALSA available at this
moment - in fact, the one before the latest, X.X.3
try to install this version if your GCC goes round ...

My only problem left with ALSA is that my sound card is ... a Vibra16X ;o)
