Of course. For that kind of quality, you can't even consider doing it inside
a PC. But...

Why do you need to turn to these kinds of technologies?

USB support for Linux is at a very primitive state right now. There's
a web page about the project here:

http://peloncho.fis.ucm.es/~inaky/uusbd-www/

I don't think it's ready for prime time yet.

The Firewire project (http://eclipt.uni-klu.ac.at/ieee1394/) isn't even as
far along as the USB group, AFAIK. But I'm not really an expert on any of
these technologies.

You can't just use a PCI card with built-in digital IO? I would think that
that would be the simplest possible solution.

Sounds ominous.

It's been my experience that SAMs books aren't worth the paper they're
printed on. Books published by O'Reily are usually much higher in quality
and usually cost less too!

Just do it. Jump in with both feet, try to do stuff, get stuck, read
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP, figure stuff out, hack, hack, hack...

G'luck.
