Thank you for trying widi.
Maybe widi played to midi port of your sound card.
Check which sequencer client widi send midi event to by
`cat /proc/asound/seq/clients'

For playing with FM, you need a ALSA sequencer client which emulates
MIDI with FM. But there exists no such client, as long as I know.
(BTW, Is anyone working on it?)
I know only the client with AWE by Steve Ratcliffe.

Instead I suggest TiMidity++ or such software.
TiMidity++ supports ALSA native pcm device.
