what's up with new alsa?  I thought it would work ok if i just used insmod
snd, since alsasound start didn't work, but it's constantly resetting the
mixer to 0, despite the values in asound.conf

Also, I can't cat sounds to /dev/audio or /dev/dsp, was alsa able to do
this before?
