The ALSA sequencer is not compatible with the OSS sequencer. Playmidi
expects an OSS sequencer, so it won't work with ALSA.

In fact, ALSA sequencer support isn't really finished yet.

If you want to play midi files under ALSA, why don't you try timidity
rather than playmidi? timidity is available as a Debian package.

Debian systems will load any modules listed in /etc/modules at boot time.
