I have the exact same problem.  The only thing that will play wav files for
me is aplay and I receive write errors on some and no errors on others.  They
all play whether or not there is an error.  I also cannot get sounds to work
in KDE.  Me CD player will play CD's without any problem though.  Have you
found a solution to this problem?  I'll keep looking and I'll let you know if
I find anything.
