The idea of designing/building something that specifically fit your needs
is not pointless.
But, again, you can find cheap 16-bit soundcards for 8 bucks, 
and there is no point in looking for hi-fi sound from a sound card... I
mean.. 
For some peculiar coincidence, my laptop is "tuned" on a local radio
station and 
i can hear it when I turn on the speakers...this is not a good point to
start an hi-fi system.
Real hi-fi components need dedicated power supply, EM shields,good
connections and clever design
None of those is present on a pc sound-card.
