It's strange - I've never had any problems like that - I started using ALSA
somewhere around 2.1.100. Now I'm running 2.2.1 and it's OK.
But I've never used "modprobe snd". I do "modprobe snd-sb8" and "modprobe
snd-gusclassic" but only right after compiling a new version. Normally I use
alsasound script.

I also have modutils 2.1.121, but I've compiled them myself (I guess your
