Hi!

I have already sent a report to the alsa-user list but I got no
response yet, so I will try emailing you directly :).

I have a Compaq machine with a built in, non PnP ES1869 sound
card. This works OK with OSS, it also works reasonably well with Alsa
ES1688 driver (neither supporting full duplex).

I tried the ES1869 driver, and these are my experiences:

The mixer works perfectly, and the recording also seems to be OK.

The playing on the first device always 'loops', it keeps repeating the
first played segment. I tried it with 'x11amp', with 'cat xyz >
/dev/dsp', and with 'aplay'. The result is always the same. With
'aplay' it writes 'write error' after some time.

I now tried the second playback device, and to my amazement it almost
always (*) works (x11amp, aplay, ...). But while this device is used,
the first device can't be used for recording, so I am exactly where I
was :(

Here's my configuration as reported by 'cat /proc/asound/cards':

0 [card1 ]: AudioDrive - ESS AudioDrive ES1869
                     ESS AudioDrive ES1869 at 0x220, irq 5, dma1 1, dma2 0

These setting are correctly (used by windows as well) autodetected by
the Alsa driver.

Here's the driver version:

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.3.0-pre3.
Compiled in Jan 26 1999 for kernel 2.2.0 with versioned symbols.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Thanks,
Miklos

(*) Just now while x11amp was starting to play a new number the driver
seems to have thought it should play 8 bit sound (I got a great blast
of noise). Stopping and restarting the playing restored the normal
playing mode. This happend only once till now, and it does not seem to
be reproduceable.
