one word: FREE...  my sound card (AudioPCI - es1370) is only supported in devel
kernels, OSS/Linux, and ALSA.  of those three, ALSA was the only logical choice,
as i have networking problems in development kernels, and i don't have $30 to
spend just to have support for my snd crd...

Hey,

I'm not gonna answer your alsa vs OSS question 'cause I haven't gotten it to
install properly.
Some people say that OSS doesn't really support full-duplex but I've got it
working fine on my machine.

About music.
Tools for linux are way better that cooledit and other crap.  But far less
user-friendly.
If you want to do music in a nice GUI with powerful tools, buy a Mac.
