Hmm. That's strange.  /usr/src/linux was a link to
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.33, and I was indeed running 2.0.33.

I recompiled the kernel again and replaced my old 2.0.33 with the new 2.0.33,
recompiled and installed the alsa driver, and this time it worked.

I don't really understand what happened, but things seem to be working now.
