This is right question: Some hardware supports this feature, some not...
In most recent ALSA API were added SND_MIXER_CINFO_CAP_RECORDBYMUTE flag
to mixer channel capabilities.

At current time is this feature supported by this hardware and these
drivers: CS4236 (from chips CS4235 up to CS4239) and Sound Blaster
16/AWE...
