The F. Richard Moore is excellent, especially if you don't have an extensive
math background.

F. Richard Moore, Elements of Computer Music. Prentice Hall Technical
Reference ISBN 0-13-252552-6

If you have more math, basically advanced calculus w/complex variable theory
and some background in LaPlace and Fourier transforms, try

Alan V. Oppenheim/Ronald W. Schafer, Digital Signal Processing. Prentice Hall
ISBN 0-13-214635-5

There are many more books on the subject as well, so perhaps the best advice
*is* to head to your local university library.

I'm struggling to learn this stuff too; good luck!
