Another:

ALSA: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
GALSA: GNU Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
ASAL: Advanced Sound Architecture for Linux
GASAL: GNU Advanced Sound Architecture for Linux
LASA: Linux Advanced Sound Architecture
GLASA: GNU Linux Advanced Sound Architecture

I don't like words 'Sound System' which sounds like Open Sound System
and this isn't really our future way...

OK, my today's story: We made local MBONE conference of TEN34-CZ Cache
group and I play with computer specialy designed for videoconferences
(Pentium II 300Mhz / 64MB RAM, MIRO PCTV (Bt848) video/tuner card). In
this computer is unfortunately most common soundcard today - SB AWE 64.
Windows 95 crashes after few minutes of work with MBONE tools, so
looks that only good way was Linux. After some time playing with OSS, I
didn't get good results. Due to OSS/Lite doesn't support duplex for SB16
soundcards, RAT (Robust Audio Tool) makes pauses in both directions.
So I remove GUS PnP from my computer and run (after few fixes) driver
0.0.3 from this project. RAT worked greatly after this change.

I installed my driver on computer of my chief (some Compaq with integrated
ESS AudioDrive 1688) and RAT looks good, too (only playback, of course).
OSS driver in 2.1.88 makes pauses and stops after few minutes.

I have SB AWE 64 soundcard now in my computer at work and I probably try
make some duplex driver for this soundcard. I need work with RAT. Thomas
looks have some code for SB cards, so if we merge our work I can do some
MIDI and Synthesizer stuff rather.

Looks that most wanted application is good mixer. Altrough I emulate OSS
ioctl calls, driver have mute ability and some mixer sources are muted by
default. None of OSS application can unmute these sources, so we probably
need native application. Thomas setup in your API volume in dB. Do you
mean, that this right way? Maybe we can do some way of switching between
dB and linear range 0-100.
