Hello all,

Some comments on the ESS1888 driver (they're reasonably well researched,
though a lot of remarks are probably caused by ignorance about sound
drivers in general).

Compiled the latest CVS-export (03-13) - fixed for the 2.0.x series
kernel. Drivers and libs compile, [alsactl won't - but alsa-mixer et al
do work. Another small quirk is that the macro AM_PATH_ALSA(0.1.1) in
configure.in in the /alsa-util dir can't be found. But you've probably
noticed this; and I've just deleted it in between]

When I load the driver for an ES1888 on-board soundcard (Compaq Presario
computer, Slackware 3.6, libc 5, 2.0.35), I get the devices for two
pcm's [ehr, I'm sure you have a very good reason for the change in
device naming, as it must be as annoying for the developers as it is for
the users]. I only tried two applications, "cat" and "mpg123". cat
<file> > /dev/pcmC0D1 produces sound - and goes to sleep instead of
returning. The mpg123 application seemed not to be able to change the
playback speed of this device, all sounds were at 79xx Hz ("requested
8000"), but that may be a problem of mpg123, since the driver I'm using
at my own computer, 0.2.x, simply says "audio I/O error" when I try to
redirect to /dev/snd/pcm00.

When I try to use /dev/adsp1, it works at the right speed but then
there's an interrupt problem, the sound keeps repeating. (PnP of this
card is probably turned off, since pnpdump shows no info; I did not go
into what-ints-are-used, willing to if necessary, but sound plays well
under Win95).

/dev/pcmC0D0 does not produce any sound at all. Yes, I did unmute all
devices (all of them, to make sure no mixup occured in the naming), and
set volume to 100%. While I try to play sounds, /proc/card1/pcmC0D0 says
it is playing - so that part works.
I compiled the drivers again after a --with-debug=detect, but this has
no effect whatsoever.

I'm willing to test things further if that's helpful. I'm not on the
alsa-devel mailinglist (I'm on alsa-user for sake of managing the
mini-HOWTO).
