For what it's worth, I have the same problem, although my problem started
with the change from 2.2.2 to 2.2.3

Version/cardinfo:
ehliar@angreal:/proc/asound>cat version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.3.0-pre4.
Compiled in Mar 9 1999 for kernel 2.2.3 (SMP).
ehliar@angreal:/proc/asound>cat cards
0 [card1 ]: SB16 - Sound Blaster 16
                     Sound Blaster 16 at 0x220, irq 5, dma 1&5
