I know. It's a character special file. I used this approach with x11amp w/
OSS driver (the ALSA driver seems to be in a state of heavy devel) which 
uses sndstat to determine the number of pcm devices. With this file I can 
choose a different pcm device from x11amp's preferences.

I use the alsasound script on startup. It restores mixer levels. You  
could also try to add pre-remove and post-install stuff to conf.modules.
