Yes it is terrible, but I have not found a recorder/player/editor that
is as nice to use and featurefull.  By all means please suggest one that
comes with source (so I can compile for alpha).  There are some nifty
tools out there but no go on the alpha thus far.

I suppose I could hack sound studio, but I am a bit tight on time and
projects at the moment.  As I recall from trying to bring up an opti 931
under OSS, sound studio code was reasonably easy to deal with if a
little less than robust when it came to hardware failures (but I am not
sure I should expect anything to work under the broken DMA setup I was
trying to fix at the time.

I guess I recall some discussion of removing sndstat and I see that it
has been removed from future versions in the readme, but I assumed that
the oss emulation would include this as well for the sake of
compatability.

Not a gripe, just an explanation.

I had used 0.3 for some time and did not think going to -pre4 would
remove something like that.

the sndstat file is a good idea, and thanks for the file.
