I'm hunting for decent docs, but haven't looked very hard yet.  It seems
as though ASIO may be something to look into, if nothing else, to gleen
some ideas.

ASIO drivers seem to allow the use of various pieces of hardware (namely
multitrack digital recording hardware) to interface with various vendors'
multitrack recording software.  It is suppporte on both Mac and Windows
platforms. 

i.e.  It allows you to use Ensoniq PARIS hardware on a Mac and record your
tracks into Cubase VST, (actually, i don'tt hink that's on the mack) but
perhaps ASIO compiant ProTool 24.... etc.

If I find specs/docs, i'll point them out, otherwise, I'm sure someone
else will.
