The awelib patch manager (which I use at present) allows you to
allocate a voice to a bank / preset / note.
Your scheme assumes that a single instrument is assigned to a bank /
preset pair ? Or at best the bank/preset
instrument map is defined in a device specific file ?

The ability to load voices into individual notes is important when
constructing sound palletes for drum kits.
I am probably being stupid but I can not see how to treat the mapping of
voices onto single notes in a generic
fashion using your scheme. I would need to edit a device specific file ?

The mapping I am suggesting would probably require a sourceNote and
destinationNote in the snd_seq_instrument_t
message. If these where both -1 then the mapping would be a whole bank
other wise the destination Note will play
the source note of the specified path.

The awelib scheme will also allow a defualt bank/preset with
individual key mappings overrifing the default
voice.

This could probably all be done (and is maybe better) in a layer in the
client. But then you may have problems
with memory resources on sample playing cards. EG say I only want to use
a nice snare sound in one of my
soundfont banks and a bass drum from another sound font bank . . .
I do not want to have to load the whole drum kit (my 8MBytes would get
eaten quite quickly).
