I have a GUS PnP and an AWE64 value. I think that I get better sound
out of my GUS rather than my AWE. The hissng could be because of the IW
bug which causes a lot of noise on the PCM devices and which is caused by
too loud PCM data (?). Reset seems to be the only guaranteed way of
getting rid of the hissing once it's there. I usually have everything set
to 0 dB. I have routed the AWE trough the GUS because AWE's inputs seem to
cause a lot of noise.

PS. Sorry for the long delay before answering.
