Has anyone been able to get technical information out of ESS on the ASSP
inside the Maestro II sound chip?

Nope.

Also, is anyone seriously working on a maestro-II sound driver for alsa?

I was, then ran into the "ESS Stonewall". They don't even bother to return
my phone calls, even though they don't know what I want.

Now that I'm temporarily living in the Silicon Valley, I might just go pay
'em a visit.
