:So my point is: In how far do computer music apps differ from
:my modem stuff? And given that my modem stuff works, why
:all the fuzz about the scheduler? Has anyone actually tried and
:had problems?

My Windows experience has made me VEEEEERY suspicious about these
you-don't-have-to-mind-if-you-have-only-your-app-running guys ;-)

I haven't tried under Linux but my Win32 code was litterally SUSPENDED (with
card buffer going into an infinite loop) when moving some big windows (with
opaque move) or accessing Parallel port Zip... I REALLY think people daring
to go on stage with Cubase for Windows deserve a statue somewhere in Redmond
(did you know David Bowie was on stage with a MacOS ? He must have five of
them playing, ready to switch in case of Mac bomb crash)...

The point is : I know I PROBABLY won't have my interrupt delayed too much if
I only run my process and with some good HD tweaking (hdparms ?) but I'd
like to have the scheduler allow me to do network or run an xterm but
preserving the cpu power needed by my app (the remaining cpu power would
then be shared among the other apps).. I clearly prefer this approach...

BTW... Steve was discussing the opportunity of a new mailing list... I'm
just starting OMT resources project with some friends... It is a "audio
software resource center for real-time apps" wannabe...

Maybe we could start some mailing lists... One for drivers, another for
scheduling, real-time os and so on... What do you think about it ? Woud some
of you be interested ? I have a participation call sent to some
music-related developers... Does it interest you ?

Benjamin.
